Women's Basketball Downs Becker on Senior Day

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team took down Becker College by a final score of 69-54 on Senior Day at Higgins Court on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Pride improves to 13-8 on the season. Becker drops to 12-8 on the year.

Before the game, Pride seniors Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.), Shannon Hayes (Billerica, Mass.), Linsay Bumila (Raynham, Mass.), and Brandi Bonneau (Derry, N.H.) were honored for their careers at Regis.

The first quarter was all Pride, as Regis outscored the visitors 24-14 in the game's opening 10 minutes. Regis jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the game's opening three minutes, but sharp shooting from beyond the arc for Becker kept the Hawks within striking distance. Becker's Cassidy Harrison (Foxborough, Mass.) had two of the Hawks' four threes in the quarter, finishing the period with a team-high eight points.

Becker continued to light it up from deep in the second quarter to keep the game close. Hawk freshman Jazlyn Contreras (Pawtucket, R.I.) came of the bench and was a perfect 3-for-3 from distance in the quarter, leading all players with nine points. Pride juniors Sam D'Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) and Maura Russell (Braintree, Mass.) each hit triples in the period as well, and the Pride took a 41-30 lead into the break.

The Pride still couldn't quite pull away when the teams returned from the locker rooms, as both teams each scored 12 points in the third to keep the margin at 11 points. Harrison scored nine of the Hawks' 12 points in the quarter to run her total to 19 through three, while the Pride had four players each score baskets to take a 53-42 lead into the fourth and final quarter.

Regis pulled away in the fourth to secure the victory, opening the quarter on a 14-4 run to take its largest lead of the game at 67-46 with 3:20 remaining. Becker closed the contest on an 8-2 run, but it proved to be far too little to late, as the Pride secured the win.

Stone led all scorers on the game with 20 points, and finished with the game's only double-double, adding 11 assists. Hayes (15) and D'Angelo (12) also finished in double figures for the Pride. Harrison was Becker's high scorer, putting home 19 on the afternoon.

Next up for the Pride, they'll head on the road for their second matchup of the season against Simmons College on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. tip. The Hawks are next in action on Monday night, travelling to Lesley University at 8:00 p.m.
