WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team hung tough with #17 Bowdoin on Tuesday evening, but the depth of the Polar Bears proved to be too much as the Pride fell by a score of 80-55.
With the win, the Polar Bears improve to 10-1 on the season, while the Pride drops to 4-4.
The Bowdoin bench outscored the Regis reserves 33-9 on the evening, led by senior guard Rachel Norton (Braintree, Mass.), who added 14 points in 14 minutes off the bench. Regis junior Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Bowdoin junior Lydia Caputi (Brunswick, Maine) each scored 16 points for their respective sides to lead their teams.
The Pride hung close in the opening half, going to the locker room down by a score of 42-31. Stone led all scorers in the opening half with 12 points for the Pride, but it was strong shooting from beyond the arc that helped the Polar Bears jump out to their lead. Led by three triples from Caputi, Bowdoin went 5-for-11 (45%) from distance in the opening twenty minutes.The Pride outscored the Polar Bears 17-15 in the 3rd quarter to cut the deficit to 57-48 to enter the final frame, before Bowdoin pulled away for good. Senior guard Marle Curle (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) scored all of her 11 points in the 4th quarter to guide the Polar Bears to a dominating 23-7 edge in the period to close out Bowdoin's 10th victory of the season.
The Pride will return to action on Thursday night with a road matchup with future Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe St. Joseph's College (Maine) at 6:00 p.m. Bowdoin returns on Friday evening as they take on the nation's top-ranked team in a NESCAC battle against Tufts on the road.
