Women's Basketball Overwhelms Wheelock In Home Opener

WESTON, Mass.Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) delivered game highs of 18 points and seven rebounds and the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team opened its home slate with a 68-37 win over Wheelock College in New England Collegiate Conference action Thursday night at Higgins Court. The Pride improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference while the Wildcats slip to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Amanda Hawkesworth (Abington, Mass.) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds for the Pride who are now within five games of a milestone 100 consecutive conference wins. Mikayla Murphy (Attleboro, Mass.) added seven points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Sarah Tobin (Salisbury, Mass.) scored a team-high 10 points for Wheelock who saw Regis score the first 14 points of the game. Hawkesworth and Stone both scored back-to-back buckets as part of the early run halted only on a Katie Walsh (East Islip, N.Y.) layup with 4:02 left in the quarter. The Pride would cool off though as Tobin and Walsh found the bucket again and Regis led by just nine points at the end of the first period.

The Pride would break the game wide open the second quarter, allowing just three points by the visitors while ballooning the lead to 30-11 by halftime. Hawkesworth dominated the opening two periods, putting up 10 points on 5-8 shooting by halftime.

Regis opened up a 29-point lead by the end of the third quarter and never looked back.

Both teams return to action Saturday, Dec 3 with Regis playing at Daniel Webster at 1:00 p.m. and Wheelock hosting Bay Path at 2:00 p.m.
