Regis Seniors Shine on Senior Day

WESTON, Mass. - The four seniors on the Regis College softball team made the most of Senior Day as the Pride hosted Mitchell College Sunday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at the Regis Softball Field.

Chloe Beland (Southborough, Mass.) went 5-for-6 at the plate and made a spectacular diving catch to end the top of the fifth inning of the second game. Abby Erickson (Worcester, Mass.) drove in Regis' run in the third inning of the second game, Marissa Allen (Coventry, R.I.) caught both games of the doubleheader, and Jaylene Deslauriers (Taunton, Mass.) returned from injury to pinch hit in the first game.

GAME ONE: Mitchell 8, Regis 0

Mitchell jumped on the board right away, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning, featuring a three-run home run from Brooke Whitmarsh. Mel Rees (Middleborough, Mass.) came on in relief in the first inning and held the Mariners off for six innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out four batters.

Katelyn Lipsky worked her way out of a jam in the bottom of the first inning after Bianca Burke (Cambridge, Mass.) reached on an error and Lexi Nichols (Granby, Conn.) was hit by a pitch. After Rees advanced both runners to second and third on a groundout, Lipsky induced two popouts to end the inning without any runs scoring for the Pride.

Lipsky did not allow a hit until Beland singled to left field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, Gemma Landry led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a groundout to extend the Mariner lead to 8-0. In the bottom of the sixth, Lipsky forced the Pride into three groundouts to close out the game on the run rule.

GAME TWO: Mitchell 9, Regis 1

Similar to the first game, Mitchell scored multiple runs in the top of the first inning, starting with an RBI single by Whitmarsh. The Mariners loaded the bases before both Olivia DeCicco and Emily Reynolds drew walks to force in runs. Emma LaBreck scored on a fielder's choice, and Lola Worsdale wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single to increase Mitchell's lead to 5-1.

The Pride finally broke through in the bottom of the third inning as Beland singled, advanced to third on a single to right field by Rees, and scored on a groundout hit by Erickson. The Mariners would score three runs in the top of the fourth inning, two of them on a bases-loaded single by DeCicco, followed by another run in the top of the fifth inning as Worsdale drove in Lipsky on a bunt single.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Regis threatened to extend the game thanks to consecutive singles by Beland and Rees, but a double play ended the scoring threat and the game. Reynolds picked up the complete game victory for the Mariners, allowing seven hits, one walk, and one run in five innings with three strikeouts.

Regis (7-21, 3-11 GNAC) is scheduled to host Mass Maritime Wednesday, April 24, in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. before closing out the regular season next weekend against Dean and at USJ.
