Zancan Hits Grand Slam as Softball Splits with Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. - Regis College split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball doubleheader with Elms College Saturday afternoon at Condon Field, losing game one 3-2 while winning game two 6-0.

GAME TWO: Regis 6, Elms 0

Game two belonged to Regis as the Pride continued to outhit Elms, this time by a margin of 7-2 including a grand slam by Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) who went 1-for-2 on the day with four RBIs.

The Pride scored first in the top of the fifth inning when a Kayla Morrill (Lynn, Mass.) walk and an error at third base put runners at second and third, with Morrill scoring later in the inning on a wild pitch.

The Regis offense exploded in the top of the sixth, starting with a lead-off double by Bianca Burke (Cambridge, Mass.), who later scored off a single through the right side of the infield by Diana Petrarca (Coventry, R.I). Back-to-back singles by Ciara Collins (Lynn, Mass.) and Morrill loaded the bases for Zancan who hit a grand slam for her first career home run, giving the Pride a 6-0 lead.

Petrarca earned the win in the pitching circle for the Pride, pitching the complete game while striking out four batters and allowing only two hits and zero earned runs.

GAME ONE: Elms 3, Regis 2

Regis outhit Elms by a margin of 7-1, as Burke went 2-for-4 including a triple and a run scored while Braga went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The Pride picked up a run in the top of the fifth inning when Burke hit a triple to right field and was driven in on the ensuing at-bat by a sacrifice fly to left field by Braga.

Regis threatened in the top of the seventh inning with three straight singles by Lexi Nichols (Granby, Conn.), Burke, and Braga loading the bases for Petrarca who drove in a run and reached first on an error by the left fielder. The Falcons managed to get out of the jam by making two straight outs with the force at home plate to end the game.

Colby Butterfield (Gilford, N.H.) pitched the complete game for the Pride, striking out seven batters while allowing only one hit and two earned runs.

A three-run first inning spelled disaster for the Pride as the Blazers scored runs off an RBI single by Kelsey Bennett, a passed ball, and an RBI ground out by Josie Cammarata.
