Softball Falls in Monday Contests

Clermont, Fla. – The Regis College softball team played two close games Monday, falling to Saint Mary's, 4-3, before dropping their contest against Fontbonne in extra innings, 12-4.

Saint Mary's 4, Regis 3

Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) picked up two hits, one a double, and added a pair of RBIs, while Diana Petrarca (Coventry, R.I.) added an RBI triple and pitched two innings without giving up an earned run.

In the top of the first after walks by Andria Braga (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Kayla Morrill (Lynn, Mass.), Rasmussen stepped to the plate and hit a double down the left field line that brought Braga across home plate.

In the bottom half of the inning with a runner on second base, the Cardinals' Heidi Stewart found the left center gap for an RBI single, bringing in the runner from second. After the next two Saint Mary's (2-1) batters reached base, Paige Gudmundson hit a single up the middle, bringing in two additional runs to give the Cardinals a 3-1 lead.

In the third, Morrill again reached first safely and was brought across the plate off a triple by Petrarca. With the Pride up in the fourth and the bases loaded, Rasmussen hit a single through the right side of the infield, bringing Sarah Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.) across to tie the game.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Stewart reached safely off an error by the defense, with Teesa Shafranski being substituted as a pinch runner. With two outs and Shafranski on third, Gudmundson hit a single to bring in the game winning run, earning her third RBI of the day.

Fontbonne 12, Regis 4 (8 Innings)

Madi McLellan (Fremont, N.H.) pitched 6.2 innings total in the contest, giving up four earned runs and recording nine strikeouts without giving up walk. Rasmussen went 2-for-4 at the plate, hitting her second double of the day while adding another pair of RBIs, while Erin Murphy (Bedford, N.H.) and Brianna Page (New Boston, Mass.) also added a hit and an RBI apiece in the extra inning loss.

The Pride started strong with their first two runners reaching base in the bottom half of the first inning. Rasmussen again connected with a pitch, sending it back up the middle to bring in the runner from second on an RBI single.

After Petrarca loaded the bases later in the first, Murphy put the ball in play on a fielder's choice that allowed Rasmussen to cross home plate. Page also hit an RBI single in the first inning, bringing Petrarca in to give Regis a 3-0 lead after the first frame.

In the second inning, Rasmussen again brought in Braga, this time off a double to right center field, to give the Pride a 4-0 lead.

After three shutout innings from McLellan, Fontbonne was able to break through in the fourth inning after a double by Gracie Morris brought the runner home from second base. The Griffins added a pair of runs in the fifth inning off back-to-back doubles by Lauren Proehl and Hannah Miener, shrinking the Pride lead to one. With a runner on second in the top of the sixth inning, Fontbonne's Daisy Watkins doubled to left-center field to tie the game at 4-4.

After a scoreless seventh, the Griffins were able to take advantage of the international tiebreaker, scoring the game-winning run off a Skylar Freeman sacrifice fly to spark an eight-run victory.

Regis (1-3) enjoys a day off before returning to action Wednesday, March 4, with games against Elizabethtown at 10 a.m. and Rosemont at 12:15 p.m.
