REGIS SUFFERS 4-0 LOSS IN NECC THIRD ROUND

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis College softball team suffered a 4-0 loss at the hands of Mitchell College in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Third Round on Saturday afternoon. The Pride close out their season at 10-20, while the Mariners move even to 18-18 while also advancing to the NECC Championship with the victory.

Mitchell made it a 1-0 game early in the first inning when Shannon O'Neil (Chicopee, Mass.) singled through the right side to drive Lindsey Romagnino (Totowa, N.J.) home. Shortly after in the top of the second, the Mariners tacked on another pair of runs for a 3-0 lead over the Pride.

After singling to second base, Samantha Ryan (Quaker Hill, Conn.) stole second just before Alexandra Blanchette (Taftville, Conn.) singled to right center field to send Ryan home for the two run advantage. In the Mariner's next at-bat, Rivkah Berkman (New London, Conn.) reached on-base after an error and Blanchette scored a run of her own to make it a 3-0 contest.

The Pride struggled defensively, making five errors throughout the afternoon. Berkman put the game out of reach by the top of the 5th inning when she made it 4-0. Berkman started out the inning by reaching first base before advancing to second following a Pride error. She then moved up to third following a fielder's choice by Jenny Groman (New Britain, Conn.) and then scored on a passed ball.

Perhaps the Crimson & Gold's best opportunity of the day came in the 6th inning. Jenna Casello (Westborough, Mass.) got things started by singling down the left field line before a SAC bunt from Rachel DesRochers (Westford, Mass.) sent Casello to second. Following a Kirbie Garvey (Littleton, Mass.) pop up to third base, Alyssa McKinnon (Raynham, Mass.) singled through the right side to push Casello to third base. Regis was unable to take advantage as Katie Cuozzo (Lynn, Mass.) flied out to left field to close out the inning.

Casello (2-for-4) and Cuozzo (2-for-3) paced the Pride with two hits apiece in the game, while Cuozzo suffered the loss on the mount to close out the year at a 9-10 mark. She pitched all 7 innings and gave up four runs, one of which was earned, while striking out three batters.

Brittany Fiederlein (Hampton, Conn.) improved to 14-7 on the season after pitching all 7 innings in the win. She gave up eight hits and struck out one batter. O'Neil, Ryan, and Blanchette led the Mariners with one hit apiece in the contest.
