REGIS GRABS FIRST WIN IN SPLIT WITH BECKER

LEICESTER, Mass. - Regis College picked up its first win of the season against Becker College in the second part of a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Russell Field in Leicester, Mass. The Hawks won game one 10-9 in dramatic fashion, while dropping the nightcap 8-2.

In game one, Regis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on sloppy defense by the Hawks. Katie Blackburn (Milford, Mass.) made Becker pay for their miscues with an RBI triple into left field.

The Hawks responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Megan Bolduc put Becker on the board when she scampered home on a wild pitch. After back-to-back walks by Megan Cordon (Watertown, Conn.) and Jessica Brochu (Hardwick, Mass.), Shawna Drown (Watertown, Tenn.) hit an infield single, scoring Cordon with the Hawks second run.

Becker took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Talan Barron (Methuen, Mass.) blasted a three-run homerun over the left field fence, giving the Hawks a 5-2 lead. The next batter Megan Cordon mirrored Barron's success when she drove a ball over the left field fence, putting Becker up 6-3.

In the top of the third inning, the Pride hit four straight singles with two outs, while taking advantage of more sloppy defense by the Hawks. Regis scored four runs, giving them a 7-6 lead. Alex Manavas (Montville, Conn.), Samantha Bliss (Framingham, Mass.) and Cassie Langone (Chichester, N.H.) had RBI singles in the inning.

In the top of the fourth, Katie Blackburn gave the Pride an 8-6 lead when she singled home Kara Donovan (Woburn, Mass.) from second base. Blackburn eventually scored from third base on a wild pitch, lifting the Pride to a 9-6 lead.

The Hawks cut the Regis lead to 9-7 in the bottom of the fourth when Jessica Brochu hit a two-out RBI single to centerfield, scoring Melissa Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.).

Becker continued to chip away at their deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning. Talan Barron got things started when she tripled into the right field corner. Megan Cordon followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Barron and cutting the Pride lead to 9-8.

In the bottom of the seventh, Whitney Buck (Old Town, Me.) earned a leadoff walk. After pinch runner Lauren Lavalle (Millbury, Mass.) stole second, Megan Bolduc singled her home with the tying run. Melissa Rhodes gave the Hawks the walk-off victory when she doubled home Bolduc with the game-winning run.

In the nightcap, the Pride pounded out 15 hits and rode a strong pitching performance from Sarah Porteus (South Wellfleet, Mass.) to earn their first win of the season. Cassie Langone went 4-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored to pace Regis.

Regis (1-10, 1-3 NECC) returns to action on Tuesday, April 10 when they travel to Fitchburg State University for a doubleheader with the Falcons, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
