FIVE-RUN ADVANTAGE FOR REGIS COLLEGE NOT ENOUGH LATE IN DOUBLEHEADER

WESTON, Mass.—Fitchburg State College handed Regis College a doubleheader loss on Regis’ home field Tuesday evening. Fitchburg State (10-13) defeated Regis College (1-30) 9-7 and 8-3, respectively, in the two games that the Falcons and Pride played.

Considering Regis’ most productive inning of the season, the Pride was unable to turn its five runs in the second inning and 7-2 advantage into a game one win.

With Fitchburg State having scored just two runs in the first to tie with Regis College, Alissa Michaud (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) began a four-hit five-run inning with a single. Michaud would not score a run for the Pride, but her 3-for-4 batting, and four runs batted in were a team-best for Regis College.

Stefanie Wozmak (Auburn, NH/Memorial) would score Regis’ first run that inning, followed by Shannon Bradish (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic), Sarah Porteus (South Wellfleet, Mass./Nauset), Alex Manavas (Montville, Conn./Montville), and Rachel Cavella (West Roxbury, Mass./Fontbonne Academy).

Porteus went 2-for-3 at the plate, scored one run, had a RBI, and walked in the game. As the pitcher, Porteus struck-out two batters, and allowed 10 hits while facing 36 batters. The Falcons would hold defensively for the remaining five innings not allowing Regis to score.

Offensively, Fitchburg State battled to within one run by the third inning. The Falcons tallied four runs in the top of the third inning which began with Meghan Jenkins (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) who reached base on an error by Regis’ Jacqyelyn Etheridge (East Boston, Mass./East Boston).

Jillian Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and Nicole Monroe (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) each tallied the following runs. Moses batted an impressive 3-for-4, scored two runs in the game, and tied teammate Kelly Bourgea (Malden, Mass./Malden) with two RBIs.

Moses also had two RBIs in game two, and another two runs. Jessica Drago (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) started as the pitcher for Fitchburg State, but pitched just 1.2 innings, allowed four hits, seven runs, and had five errors in 13 batters faced. Monroe pitched 5.1 innings, and allowed just three hits in 20 batters faced for Fitchburg State.

Regis’ Hope Benjamin (Rochester, Mass./Rochester) hit her sixth homerun of the season in game two on a solo shot  deep over the centerfield wall. It would be the only homerun freshman pitcher Nancy Henry (Forestdale, Mass./Sandwich) gave up in her six innings on the mound. Henry struck-out two batters, allowed eight hits and two runs in 25 batters faced.

Fitchburg State got on the board late, but scored three runs in the third inning following a Melissa Wadman (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) single. Wadman also hit a homerun off Regis’ Kendra Abram (Acushnet, Mass./Bishop Connolly) in the fourth inning. Abram allowed 11 hits, committed six errors, and struck-out three batters in her seven innings on the mound. She faced 34 batters.

The loss will carry Regis College into its second non-conference game of the week Thursday versus Elms College in single game action at 5:00 PM. Fitchburg State will take on Plymouth State (April 14) at 3:00 PM.
