RACHEL CAVELLA HELPS REGIS COLLEGE CLAW INTO HAWKS

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team grabbed two more Commonwealth Coast Conference wins Saturday afternoon, defeating Regis College in both games of a doubleheader by the scores 5-0 and 5-2.

In the opener, Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) pitched her best outing of the season, holding the Pride to only two hits in the contest while striking out a season-best nine batters. Doolin took a perfect game into the fifth inning until it was broken up on a one-out single by Alex Manavas (Montville, Conn.). She would go on to retire five of the next six batters to earn her sixth win of the year.

The Hawks scored all of their runs in the first three innings of the game, beginning with an RBI single by Rachel Ehrlich (Southport, Conn.) to plate Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.). In the second inning, the Hawks added three more runs on an RBI single by Erica Castro and a two-RBI triple by Pirez. In the third, Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) knocked in Doolin for the fifth run of the game.

Laura McConnell (Lexington, Mass.) finished the game 2-for-3 for the Hawks. Pirez added a hit, a run scored and two RBIs for RWU.

Kendra Abram (Acushnet, Mass.) took the loss for Regis, giving up all five runs in six innings on nine hits and walk in six innings pitched. Manavas and Amanda Carlson (Ayer, Mass.) each had a singles in the game for the Pride.

Offensively for Roger Williams, the Hawks did all of their damage in two separate innings. RWU put three runs on the board in the bottom of the second, beginning with a Kaitlyn Costa (Cranston, R.I.) RBI single to bring in Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, N.Y.). Costa would later score on a miscue in the outfield to make it 2-0 in favor of RWU. The Hawks tallied their final run of the frame on another RBI single to left, this time off the bat of Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) to score Tierney.

In the top of the third, Regis pulled within one, getting RBI singles from Rachel Cavella (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Hope Benjamin (Rochester, Mass.). Yet the Hawks got back both of those runs in the fifth with an RBI double by Marcin and an RBI single by Kara Lewis (Taunton, Mass.). The Hawks would hold on to a 5-2 lead for the win.

Marcin picked up the win for the Hawks, allowing two runs on seven hits in the complete game while striking out seven. Costa finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. March contributed a hit, run scored, and RBI for her own cause.

Sarah Porteus (South Wellfleet, Mass.) suffered the loss, tagged for five runs (two earned) in six innings of work on eight hits and a walk with two Ks. Kara Donovan (Woburn, Mass.) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored while Cavella was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Roger Williams (9-12, 7-1 TCCC) travels to Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., while Regis (1-20, 0-10 TCCC) goes to Assumption College tomorrow at noon.
