Robert Wood Named NEISDA Male Swimmer of Week

WESTON, Mass. – After winning three individual titles at the 2020 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships last weekend, freshman Robert Wood (Cathedral City, Calif.) has been named the Male Swimmer of the Week by the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association, announced Wednesday by the coaches' organization.

Saturday, Wood won two events, first cruising to an eight-second victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:51.02, over 12 seconds faster than his preliminary time in the morning. In the 200 individual medley, Wood posted a winning time of 2:02.20, over three seconds quicker than his mark earlier in the day and over five seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.

Wood capped Saturday night by leading off the 400 medley relay to a second place finish with an overall time of 3:46.85, as he posted a 100 back split of 59.27 seconds. Friday night, he swam the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay that finished third with an overall time of 1:33.01 and the leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay, posting a 50 back split of 28.36 seconds, that ended up third in 1:45.01.

Sunday, Wood opened the finals session by winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.86, over three seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. He concluded the championships by anchoring the 400 freestyle relay to a second place finish, completing his 100 free split in 49.56 seconds to post an overall time of 3:24.24.

This is Wood's first weekly NEISDA award of the season. He has been named GNAC Rookie of the Week three times this year.

Several members of the Regis College swimming and diving team are preparing for the NEISDA Championships, to be held Feb. 13-16 at the Tootell Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I.
