Men’s Swim Team Finishes Third at GNAC Championships

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Robert Wood (Cathedral City, Calif.) won his third league title of the weekend, and GianCarlos Banrey (Roslindale, Mass.) successfully defended his title in the 50 butterfly as Regis College finished in third place as the 2020 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships concluded Sunday at the Boston Sports Institute Natatorium.

Wood opened the finals session by winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.86, over three seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Brendan Pike (Weymouth, Mass.) touched the wall in third place in 1:51.34, just 1/10th of a second behind the second place finisher.

In the 50 butterfly, Banrey was the only swimmer to complete the race in less than 24 seconds, winning with a time of 23.94 seconds to earn the event title for the second straight year. Banrey then joined with Pike, Grant Kollien (Acton, Mass.), and Wood in the 400 freestyle relay, as the quartet finished second with an overall time of 3:24.24.

Banrey started his evening session with a third place finish in the 50 freestyle in 22.47 seconds, with Noah Toumayan-Miller (Natick, Mass.) ending up in 10th place with a time of 26.68 seconds. Toumayan-Miller also finished eighth in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 38.69 seconds.

As a team, Regis was unable to hold off Husson University, as the Pride fell behind the Eagles' total of 192 points into third place in the final standings with 179 points. Norwich University once again took the GNAC title, ending up with 466 points.

Several members of the Regis College swimming and diving team will now prepare for the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships, to be held Feb. 13-16 at the Tootell Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I.
