Men's and Women's Swimming Slide by Gordon

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) men's and women's swimming team both impressed on Saturday morning from the Regis Aquatics Center, as the men prevailed 146-96 and the women 149-108 over Gordon College in the Pride's final home meet until January 21.

For the second week in a row, both Pride teams got off to hot starts by each prevailing in the 200 yard medley relay. Jessica Higgins (Peabody, Mass.), Sarah Leonard (Brockton, Mass.). Jessica Zernitsky (Newton, Mass.) and Ashlyn DeRoche (North Reading, Mass.) combined for the victory in the event on the women's side with a time of 2:02.28, narrowly beating Gordon's Alexa Bragg (Trumbull, Conn.), Jena Jekums (Anaheim, Calif.), Amber Collard (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Caris Lyons (Orrville, Ohio), who finished with a time of 2:04.06.

In the men's 200 yard medley relay, the Pride prevailed by nearly four and a half seconds to jump out to the early lead. Regis' Cassidy Bastianelli (Newton, Mass.), Joshua Unas (Santa Clarita, Calif.), Kiet Luong (Malden, Mass.) and Rob Ekberg (Northbridge, Mass.) combined to record a time of 1:47.57, ahead of Gordon's relay team of Caleb Petersen (Dover, Mass.), Langdon Kessner (Rochester, N.Y.), Jack Cicchelli (Middletown, R.I.) and Dean Drukker (Bedford, N.H.), who recorded a time of 1:52.03.

In the individual events, the Pride continued to roll, picking up a three wins from Higgins (100 yard butterfly, 100 yard backstroke and 50 yard butterfly) and a pair of wins from Gloria Sutton (Suffield, Conn.), in the 1000 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle, Leonard (50 yard backstroke and 100 yard breaststroke) and Zernitsky (50 yard freestyle and 100 yard individual medley).

On the men's side, Bastianelli led the way for the Pride by earning victories in three events. The senior led the field in the 1000 yard freestyle, the 50 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle. Luong, junior Nick Rainville (Reading, Mass.), Unas and senior Bryan Johnson (Sudbury, Mass.) all won two events to lift the Pride to the victory.

"We raced really well today and were able to swim some different events for most of the swimmers," said Regis head coach James Sweeney after the meet. "The women really stepped up as Gordon had beaten us the last several years in dual meets. It's great to see continued improvement."

The Fighting Scots will have two weeks off before hosting Bridgewater State on Saturday, Nov. 19. The Pride returns to the pool next Saturday when it travels to Norwich to take on the host Cadets and Babson in what Coach Sweeney is calling "our toughest dual meet this semester."
