PRIDE FINISHES AT NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

Weston, Mass.—The Regis College swimming team competed Saturday (Feb. 19) at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships. The Pride had 12 swimmers compete in their respective categories, seven for the men and five for the women.

The men’s team set a record in its first event of the weekend. The Pride clocked a time of 1:31.20 in the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle relay.  Leading off the relay, Djordje Mandic (Deering, Maine/Portland) set a school record in the 50 free by splitting a 22.08. Mandic broke his own school record set that morning by swimming a 21.97 in the prelims, and he finished 4th overall by breaking his own record to finish at 21.78.

 Alex Caliendo (Windsor, Conn./Windsor ) and Andy Laforest (Roslindale, Mass./Another Course) placed 15th and 16th respectively with career best swims of 57.10 and 57.59. Caliendo’s strong finish broke the team record with his time of 57.10.  Stephen McGovern (Dorchester, Mass./Boston College) broke his own 50 breaststroke record with a time of 28.21 in the preliminaries. McGovern finished fourth overall in finals with a 28.23

Ben Perry (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) finished 9th in the 200 backstroke and set school record with a time of 2:08.08

Christina Estrada (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone Valley Tech) qualified 12th in the 500 freestyle with a season best of 5:32.36. Estrada’s strong swimming allowed her to finish 14th overall in the finals. Lindsay Ranahan (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) finished 12th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:15.91. This was Ranahan’s personal best and placed her as the second fastest in Pride swimming history. Estrada finished 16th in the women’s 200 IM with a final time of 2:26.28. 

 Stacy Burns (Waltham, Mass./Waltham)  swam a to a 26.63 in the prelims to qualify 14th and finished 16th in finals with a 26.92.  Burns morning swim was a season best time for her by almost one full second.  Meg Kennelly (Milford, Mass./Milford) ended up 25th in the event with a career best time of 27.73.  Megan Pratt (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) ended up in 27th with a time of 27.90.The relay team of Ranahan, Estrada, Pratt and Kennelly finished 15th overall in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:31.11.  

The Regis men set a school record in the 400 medley relay by clocking a 3:47.09 in finals for a 6th place finish.  The team of Perry, McGovern, Caliendo and Mandic bested the school record by .08 seconds

 NEISDA Championships Day Two

The second day of the championship was headlined by the strong swimming of Ranahan, Estrada, Burns, and Kennelly who swam to a final time of 2:01.97.This time allowed them to finish 13th in the 200 medley relay. Stacy burns followed by swimming to a season best of 30.62 in the 50 fly to finish in a tie for 29th.  Estrada finished 8th in the 200 freestyle. Ranahan finished 13th in the 100 back with a finals time of 1:04.43.  Ranahan’s morning swim of 1:03.82 was a lifetime best and the third fastest 100 backstroke in Pride history.

 

The men set the second of five relay records with a sixth place time of 1:41.66. The team of Yerzyk, McGovern, Laforest and Mandic bested the previous record by 3 seconds. The men’s 50 fly saw three men place in the top 16. Mandic set a school record in the prelims with a 24.19.  Mandics final time of 24.61 placed him 6th overall.  Caliendo and Laforest placed 10th and 11th respectively with times of 25.58 and 25.61. Yerzyk set the 100 back record with a time of 58.78 to finish at 14th.  Perry was 16th with a finals time of 1:00.07. McGovern finished 5th in the 100 breast. McGovern reset his own school record in prelims by qualifying with a 1:02.29

The quartet of Ranahan, Pratt, Kennelly and Estrada finished in 13th in the 800 free relay with a time of 8:42.42  the men put their first ever 800 free relay on the blocks to finish 10th with an 8:02.05.

 NEISDA Championships Day Three

The final day of the championship was headlined by the strong play of Megan Kennelly.  Kennelly broke a minute in the 100 freestyle for the first time in her life to finish 27th with a time of 59.90. Megan Pratt finished with a lifetime best 1:00.79 in the 100 freestyle. Ranahan finished 10th making the last swim of her collegiate career her best swim.  Her time of 29.79 was the 3rd fastest ever in Pride history.

Mandic set the school record in the morning by qualifying with a 48.62 and he ended up 8th with a finals time of 48.80. Laforest swam the 100 freestyle and finished 19th with a 52.14.  Yerzyk made his way to the medal podium in the 50 back with a time of 26.87, good for 7th.  He had set his own 50 back record earlier in the weekend by splitting 26.36 leading off the medley relay on Saturday.

McGovern made his 3rd trip of the weekend to the medal podium by finishing 5th in the 200 breast.  McGovern’s morning swim of 2:18.35 reset the school record by over 6 seconds. In the men’s 200 fly, Caliendo destroyed the previous record by finishing 9th with a time of 2:12.55. Yerzyk and Perry ended the individual events by finishing  12th and 16th in the 100 IM 

In the final event of the meet the Pride’s women’s team finished  in 14th with a 3:58.17 and the Pride’s men’s set a school record to finish 6th.  Their time of 3:23.72 bested the record set last year by .08 seconds.  Mandic set a school record in the 100 freestyle by leading off the relay in the morning by splitting a 48.42.
