Cadets' Quick Start Leads to Victory Over Pride

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College Men's Lacrosse team hosted the Norwich University Cadets at Regis Stadium, where their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent secured a 14-9 victory. The loss drops the Pride to 2-8 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

Anthony Marsella (Johnston, R.I.) led the Pride with three goals and two assists, while Nick Klein (Buxton, Maine) contributed two goals and two assists. Defensively, Colin McGarry (Brookline, N.H.) caused five turnovers and collected seven ground balls, while Ryan Guerrette (Litchfield, N.H.) stood tall in net with 19 saves.

For the Cadets, Drew Fleury paced the offense with five goals, two assists, and six ground balls. James Raymond and Jake Marcotte each recorded two goals and two assists in the win. On the defensive end, Thomas Hopkins made 12 saves, while Mason Dils earned the victory in net.

How it Happened:

  • Alex Johnston and Fleury combined for four of the Cadets' seven goals in the opening quarter, giving Norwich a commanding 7-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.
  • Marsella worked his way behind the net to set up Cook for the Pride's first goal, followed by Klein finding the back of the net at the 11:07 mark to cut the deficit to 7-2. However, three more goals from Fleury helped the Cadets extend their lead to 11-2 at halftime.
  • The third quarter saw limited scoring from both teams until Klein connected with Marsella just before the buzzer, making it an 11-3 game heading into the final frame.
  • Brendan Cook (Billerica, Mass.) found Marsella twice in a span of 15 seconds to trim the deficit to 11-5, but a quick response from the Cadets halted the Pride's momentum. Behind two goals from Weston Schumacher (Sherborn, Mass.), the Pride tallied four more scores in the closing minutes, but the gap was too large to overcome as Norwich secured the 14-9 victory.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Matt Cabassa (Weymouth, Mass.) scooped up a season-high eight ground balls in this afternoon's effort.
  • Ryan Guerrette's 19 saves marks a new career-high for the sophomore.
