PORTLAND, Maine – Regis College Men's Lacrosse traveled to Portland, Maine, this afternoon for a non-conference matchup against the University of Southern Maine Huskies. The home team came out on top, defeating the Pride 14-10 on Hannaford Field. With the loss, the Pride's record dropped to 1-4 on the season.
Nick Klein (Buxton, Maine) and Anthony Marsella (Johnston, R.I.) led the Pride with three goals each, while Jack Jaynes (Reading, Mass.) contributed one goal, two assists, and five ground balls. In goal, Ryan Guerrette (Litchfield, N.H.) made 18 saves in the effort.
For the Huskies, Patrick O'Driscoll netted a game-high five goals, while Owen Gaulrapp added two goals and two assists. Nick Shevchenko recorded a game-high 15 ground balls, and Brycen Wolfahrt stopped 13 shots to secure the victory for the Huskies.
How it Happened:
- The Huskies struck first just under the six-minute mark, going on a three-goal run in a span of 2 minutes and 47 seconds to take the three-goal lead before Liam Donovan (Lynn, Mass.) put the Pride on the board in the final 25 seconds of the frame.
- The duo of Klein and Marsella interrupted the Huskies' four-goal run in the second quarter, each scoring at the 10 and 9-minute marks, respectively, making it a 7-3 game in favor of Southern Maine at the break.
- Klein and Weston Schumacher (Sherborn, Mass.) would notch back-to-back goals to bring the Pride within three (8-5) but the Huskies closed out the final five minutes of the quarter with four unanswered goals to take the commanding 12-5 edge heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
- Paced by a pair of goals from Marsella, the Pride outscored the Huskies 5-2 in the fourth but their rally would come up short as the Huskies went on to take the 14-10 victory on their home field.
