Last-Second Goal Propels Pride to 10-9 Win Over Roos

CANTON, N.Y. – Evan Azary (Shelton, Conn.) scored as time expired to lift Regis College Men's Lacrosse to a 10-9 victory over the SUNY Canton Roos this afternoon at the SUNY Canton Turf. The win pushed the Pride's record to 1-2 on the season.

Jack Jaynes (Reading, Mass.) led the Pride with three goals, four assists, and seven ground balls, while Liam Donovan (Lynn, Mass.) contributed a trio of assists and one goal. Brendan Cook (Billerica, Mass.) rounded out the offensive effort with three goals and one assist. Defensively, Devin Hammon (Chicopee, Mass.) made 13 saves in the victory.

The Roos were led by Austin Mesler, who registered three goals and two assists, while Eli Bullock added two assists and one goal. In goal, Hayden Todd turned away 10 shots in the effort.

How it Happened:

  • The duo of Jaynes and Weston Schumacher (Sherborn, Mass.) gave the Pride a 2-0 lead after just seven minutes of play, but SUNY responded with two goals in the final 40 seconds of the frame to tie the game at 2.
  • Jaynes and Donovan each recorded a goal and an assist in the second quarter, but Mesler led the Roos to an 8-4 lead at the break, scoring three of his team's five unanswered goals to close out the half.
  • Cook scored three of the Pride's four goals in the third quarter, leveling the score at 8-8 as the game went into the final 15 minutes of play.
  • SUNY regained a one-goal lead and held onto it until just over a minute remained, when the Pride made their move. Jaynes tied the game at 9-9 with 1:05 left, and then Donovan set up Azary for the game-winning goal as time ran out, securing the Pride's 10-9 win.
