Men’s Lacrosse Unable to Complete Rally at Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass. - Regis College rallied from a first half deficit to pull into a tie early in the third quarter, but Anna Maria College put together a 6-1 scoring run and held off another Pride comeback, 11-9, Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse match at Caparso Field.

Led by three first quarter goals from Hank Gittines, Anna Maria took a 4-2 lead into the second quarter. Matt Cabassa (Weymouth, Mass.) scored just over four minutes into the second quarter to pull the Pride within one, and then Nate Arsenault (Westford, Mass.) scored off an assist from Brendan Cook (Billerica, Mass.) to tie the match at 4-4 late in the period.

Anna Maria (2-8, 1-3 GNAC) retook the lead with 1:22 left in the first half on a goal by Liam Bedenkop, but Nick Klein (Buxton, Maine) collected his second goal of the match 1:16 into the third quarter to pull Regis back into a tie at 5-5. Just 26 seconds later, Tommy Girard put the AMCATS ahead for good as Anna Maria outscored Regis in the third quarter, 4-2, to take a 9-6 advantage into the final period.

Girard and Aiden Foster scored 69 seconds apart in the fourth quarter as Anna Maria established its largest lead of the night at 11-6, but Regis fought back as Klein assisted on a goal by Connor Deveau (Harwich, Mass.) and then scored twice more to bring the Pride within two at 11-9 with 4:14 remaining in regulation. The AMCATS would keep Regis from coming any closer while receiving one final goal from Gittines to close out the scoring.

Klein led the Pride with four goals and two assists, while Arsenault scored twice and Cook dished out three assists. Robby Fuller (Wolfeboro, N.H.) kept the Pride close with a season-high 12 saves in net, and Zach Sweeney (Torrington, Conn.) led the team with six groundballs.

Gittines finished with five goals for the AMCATS, while Bedenkop and Girard earned two goals and two assists apiece. Nathan Powers collected 10 groundballs as he went 17-for-25 on faceoffs, and the goalie duties were split between Nicholas Lopez with five saves and Matthew Peicker with four saves.
