PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Regis College lost to Johnson & Wales University, 13-4, Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse match at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Complex.
Michael Tremblay (Arlington, Mass.) led the Pride with three goals, his fourth hat trick of the season, while Michael Daras (Danvers, Mass.) dished out two assists. JJ LaRose (Litchfield, N.H.) played the entire match in net for Regis, collecting nine saves.
Johnson & Wales (4-11, 3-4 GNAC) struck first just over two minutes into the match as Ben Farrell found Erik Lindaas for his first goal of the match. The Wildcats added another tally when Carter Young fed Brad Kretz for a goal, but Tremblay immediately responded with his first goal of the night 13 seconds later to cut the Pride deficit in half.
The Wildcats extended their lead to 4-1 by the end of the first quarter on goals by Thomas Lyons and Matt Gelb. Kretz and Gelb would each pick up their second goals of the match early in the second period, and then Gelb assisted on a goal by Tyler Drago later in the quarter to increase the home team's advantage to 7-1.
Just 39 seconds after Drago's goal, Daras found Zach Leighton (Wilmington, Mass.) for a Regis tally, but Johnson & Wales answered back with goals by Joe McIntyre and Lindaas right before halftime to put the Wildcats on top 9-2 at the intermission. Only one goal was scored in the third quarter, as the duo of Gelb and Drago combined again for a man-up goal.
Johnson & Wales took its biggest lead of the night early in the fourth quarter at 12-2 before Tremblay cut into that advantage with consecutive goals. The Wildcats would close out the scoring late in the quarter as Zach D'Amico scored off an assist by Jacob deMey.
Gelb led the Wildcats with two goals and four assists, while four other JWU players also scored two goals apiece. Besides his goal, D'Amico paced the Wildcats with six ground balls and four caused turnovers, and the goalie combination of Bradley Morris and Kyle Mangan finished with five saves as Johnson & Wales outshot Regis, 32-25, including 22-9 in shots on goal.
Regis (3-7, 0-7 GNAC) closes out the regular season next Tuesday, April 23, against Rivier at Regis Stadium starting at 7 p.m.
