NORDLUND, STRONG GOALTENDING, LEAD PRIDE TO VICTORY

WESTON, Mass. – Led by six goals from freshman attack Grant Nordlund (Miami, Fla.), the Regis College men's lacrosse team earned a 13-1 non-conference victory against Green Mountain College on Saturday afternoon at Regis Stadium. With the victory, the Pride improved their record to 4-1 on the year and with the loss Green Mountain remained winless and fell to 0-4.

Nordlund's career game also included an assist that cumulated in a seven point effort. He scored two of his six goals during the first half, flipped the switch and added four goals during the second half of play.

After a successful clear attempt by Green Mountain, the Eagles set up their offense in the Regis defensive zone. Junior midfielder Nick Parsons (Harpswell, Maine) picked up a ground ball after a Pride turnover which ledthe Eagles to take a timeout.

Green Mountain set up a play that led to three shots, the first two taken by senior attack Richard Aberle Jr. (Essex, N.Y.) ended up being blocked and sailed high over the cage. The third shot, found the back of the net as junior midfielder Nate Laymon (Llion, N.Y.) passed the ball from behind to a waiting James VanDeuson (Cortland, N.Y.) who ripped the shot high and past the goalie for the 1-0 lead.

Regis responded at the 7:10 mark when junior midfielder Jack O'Brien (Milton, Mass.) had a one on one opportunity with Eagles goalkeeper Carl Diethelm (Asheville, N.C.). O'Brien came from the sideline juked his defender and buried a shot through the five hole to knot up the score at one all.

Two minutes later, the Pride took the lead when Nordlund scored his first goal of the contest. Nordlund snagged the ball from midfield, cradled the ball down the center of the field taking on two defenders, cocked back and fired a shot from 20 yards past the keeper that broke the tie.

Both teams had a few more opportunities to score before the period ended but were stifled by both goaltenders.

Nordlund scored his second goal after junior attack Nicky Rodrigo (Miami, Fla.) passed Nordlund the ball from behind the cage. Nordlund made an impressive shot fake and ripped an attempt high into the net to give the Pride a 3-1 advantage.

With 4:38 to play in the half, senior attack Peter Leighton (Wilmington, Mass.) got in on the fun by scoring his first goal of the contest when he ran around the net in a circle to lose his defender then converted a shot past the keeper which gave Regis a 4-1 lead heading into the intermission.

The Crimson and Gold distanced themselves in the third period by doubling their score, scoring four goals in the frame. Nordlund had his best scoring output in the third period , scoring three goals while Leighton notched his second of the game.

Regis kept their foot on the gas during the final period as they tallied five more goals with Rodrigo scoring two, Nordlund adding his sixth of the contest, freshman midfielder Calvin Brault (Colchester, Vt.) ringing up one goal and an own goal by the Eagles goaltender.

The Pride shutout the Eagles offensive attack for the final three periods, outscoring Green Mountain 11-0 during the final three frames en route to a 13-1 victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Estes (Geneva, Ill.) played the entire first half, made four saves, and improved to 2-0 on the season. Junior goalie Josh Giarratano (Warwick, R.I.) played the third period and turned away two shots. Sophomore goaltender D.J. Barrile (Medford, Mass.) was in net for the fourth period and made four saves. Eagles goalie Carl Diethelm made 10 saves during the defeat and dropped to 0-4 on the year.

Junior midfielder Andrew O'Riley (Hollis, N.H.) had a game-high two assists during the Pride victory while Jack O'Brien had a game-high seven ground balls. O'Brien was also an impressive 14-of-17 (82.4%) during face-offs.

Nate Laymon led the Eagles with six ground balls while junior defender Brett Baldwin (Burlington, Vt.) contributed with five ground balls.

The Pride depart Weston for a three-game road trip. They will travel to Anna Maria on Tuesday, March 24th for a 5:00 p.m. date with the AMCATS. Green Mountain heads back home to Poultney, Vt. for a three-game home stand and will welcome Johnson State to campus on Wednesday, March 25th with game-time slated for 3:30 p.m.
