REGIS SUFFERS SETBACK TO TUFTS

MEDFORD, Mass. - Despite four players scoring in the double-figures, the Regis College men's basketball team fell to Tufts University, 88-69 on Tuesday night at Cousens Gym in Medford, Mass. 

Senior Kwame Firempong and sophomore Stephen Haladyna both scored 17 points to lead the Jumbos (3-0) in the victory, while Tommy Folliard added 15 points.

Sophomore Carlos Bermudez-Glean (Boston, Mass.) led the Pride (1-2) with a game-high 20 points and had three steals. Junior Osanto Marc (Kissimmee, Fla.) added 16 points and seven rebounds to the Regis effort. Freshman Sam Jean-Gilles (Melrose, Mass.) was productive with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Eleven minutes into the game, Tufts was leading 25-6 on the strength of five early three-pointers. Senior Andrew Dowton had back-to-back threes in the third minute of play. Freshman Hunter Sabety added seven points to the early Jumbo offense. 

Regis would go on to outscore Tufts, 15-2 over the next three minutes. A three-point play by Marc cut the Jumbo advantage to 27-21 with 6:25 to go until intermission. During the Pride run, Marc led with seven points and Ethan Peana (Staten Island, N.Y.), who would finish the game with ten points, added four. A pair of free throws by Marc with four minutes to go in the half brought Regis even closer down 32-27.

The Jumbos would finish the period with a 13-6 advantage though, and they led 45-33 at the break. Folliard had six points during this stretch and led the Jumbos with 12 points in 12 first-half minutes. 

Marc led Regis with 13 points and four rebounds at the break. The Pride took advantage of 15 first-half fouls by Tufts and made 12-of-14 at the line. Marc was five-for-five and Bermudez-Glean was four-for-four.

Tufts was able to maintain its double-figure margin in the second half. A lay-up by Bermudez-Glean cut the gap to 13 at 65-52, but the Jumbos would go on to stretch their lead and hold on for the win.

The Pride will continue their action on the road on Thursday when they visit Westfield State for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
