NEAL SCORES 1,000TH POINT, REGIS COLLEGE TAKES DOWN NIGHTHAWKS

WESTON, Mass.Derrick Neal (Boston, Mass./Brighton) became the first player in Regis College men's basketball history to record 1,000 points in his career, while leading Regis College to a 60-48 victory over Newbury College Tuesday night. The win improved the Pride to 5-2 overall, and dropped Newbury to 1-7 on the season. Regis' Phil Alibrandi (York, Maine/York) led all-scorers with 18 points. Neal chipped in with 15 points.

Through the first nine points Newbury and Regis College would exchange baskets. The Nighthawks maintained a 6-3 lead through the first 5:00 minutes of play.

A Ryan Chambers three-pointer would tie the game 8-8 at 12:46 in the first half. A failed return shot by Chris Torres (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) gave Chambers the rebound, and returned another three pointer to give Regis College an 11-8 lead. Back-to-back jumpers by Kandley Val (Boston, Mass./Cathedral) put the Pride up by seven (18-11).

Torres later hit a three-pointer to cut Regis' lead to three points. With Rob Edwards (Idaho Falls, Idaho/Philips Exeter Academy) at the line following a shooting foul, he would convert both shots to put Regis up five. The two teams would battle out the last minute of the half, with Regis College holding possession and a 29-26 lead.

Returning from the half Newbury's Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass./Madison Park) went to work underneath the basket scoring 12 points, and giving the Nighthawks a three point lead for four minutes in the second half.

Closing in on 1,000 points in his career, Regis' Derrick Neal (Boston, Mass./Brighton) hit a three-pointer from the left wing, caused a steal, and scored a lay-up to put Regis College up 48-39 with 9:15 remaining in the second half.

Neal would score his 1,000th point on a three-pointer from the baseline and give Regis College a 55-39 advantage, and continue Regis' 16-0 run. John Rowley Jr. (Hartford, Conn./Rockville) tallied the first two points for Newbury on free throws.

The Nighthawks would score just nine more points in the last 3:30, while Regis College continued to possess the ball on offense to end the game.
