NO EASY TASK AWAITS REGIS COLLEGE

Weston, Mass.—A likely possibility awaits Regis College (5-7, 1-0 TCCC) when it faces Salve Regina (1-11, 0-1 TCCC) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Regis will enter Tuesday’s match-up having defeated Colby-Sawyer 89-69 Saturday.

That possibility is picking up the Pride’s second TCCC victory of the season. Regis lost to Salve Regina 73-56 last season.

The Seahawks record should not be taken lightly; Salve Regina has three player’s averaging double-digits. Ryan Birrell, Jabreche Boyd, and Dan Royce are averaging 12.4, 16.4, and 15.8 points respectively.

Royce is also Salve’s leader in rebounds (149), averaging 11.8 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 31.8 minutes, second only to Birrell with 35.8.

With two of the Seahawks three leading scorers playing much of the game, it could help Regis to get those players in early foul trouble.

Execution will be crucial when playing defense. Whatever the defensive play call, Regis will have to guard its opponent closely, and be prepared to be physical.

James Cooper (Philadelphia, Pa.) was two rebounds short of having a triple-double, as he finished Saturday’s game with 15 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. He had 12 points last year against the Seahawks.

“Coop” has one speed, and it puts him in the right places at the right time. His defender could have a tough time defending the speedy lefty. To complement his drive, Cooper has the ability to see the open defender.

Phil Alibrandi (York, Maine) finished last year’s contest with a team-high nine rebounds. Alibrandi was one of four Regis players’ to post double-digits. Alibrandi is more than capable of doing so on a nightly basis, and would be expected that he could do likewise tonight.

Derrick Neal (Boston, Mass.) has been fairly quiet this season, but that could turn around now that Regis is in conference play. He has the ability to be a dominant player when on the court. If he wants it, he will put Regis a step above similar TCCC teams.

Jesse Vega (Pawtucket, R.I.) is having a solid season from the free-throw line, making 84 percent of his attempts.

He is naturally a small forward, but plays the post. Having done a good job thus far, Vega makes the mid-range jumper approximately 50 percent of the time, and is more than likely to notch the “give me” points from the charity stripe.

Regis has some depth capable of making an impact. All hands on deck will be needed for the Pride to make sure that it moves to 2-0 in TCCC play Tuesday night.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in The Den.
