Numerous Pride Student-Athletes Elected to Regis SGA Positions

WESTON, Mass. - As the celebration of NCAA Division III Week continues, several Regis College student-athletes showed their commitment to leadership and campus involvement by recently seeking and earning election to various positions within the Regis Student Government Association (SGA).

Junior Kristin Barrett (Plymouth, Mass.), a member of the track and field team, was elected SGA Executive Board President for the 2023-24 academic year. Barrett will become the sixth Pride student-athlete in eight years to serve as student body president, including track and field alumni Matt Norton (2016-17), Fred Mathieu (2017-18), and Cole Anderson (2020-21), along with field hockey alum Alycia LeConche (2018-19) and tennis alum Ariana McCormack (2019-20).

For Barrett, this continues her involvement within student government that began in her first year at Regis. She says, "The relationships I have developed throughout my three years with my peers and administration motivated me to go for this position. Through this role, I am looking forward to working side-by-side with administration and the student body to help make the Regis community the best it can be."

Mia Rogers (Revere, Mass.), a junior on the lacrosse team, was also elected to the 2023-24 SGA Executive Board as Treasurer. Rogers wanted to become more involved on campus and serve as an advocate for as many people as possible within the Regis community.

"I have a lot to learn, but in SGA and on the women's lacrosse team, I am surrounded by countless leaders who help guide me in the right direction," says Rogers. "Regis Athletics has taught me many lessons, and I hope to share those with the Student Government Association."

Besides the Executive Board, the junior, sophomore, and first-year classes elected their own slate of officers. The voting results for all three classes featured student-athletes selected as class presidents: lacrosse player Madeline Conover (West Newbury, Mass.) for the Class of 2024, volleyball player Malakai Dehuelbes (Tucson, Ariz.) for the Class of 2025, and soccer player William Comeiro (Woburn, Mass.) for the Class of 2026.

"I decided to run for class president because I wanted to represent student-athletes on a different platform," Dehuelbes explains. "In this position, I'll support my classmates just like I support my teammates. Being able to create a positive level of energy and supporting my peers will continue to make Regis College a great campus."

On the board for the Class of 2024, Conover is joined by her lacrosse teammate Maddey Strickland (Hopkinton, Mass.) as Secretary and tennis student-athlete Nora Connor (Peabody, Mass.) as Treasurer. Connor's teammate Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) will serve with Dehuelbes as Vice President for the Class of 2025. Within the Class of 2026 board, Ambar Rodriguez (Lynn, Mass.) of the track and field team was elected Vice President, and soccer player Chris Guadagno (Miami, Fla.) will serve as Treasurer.

Elections were also held for several Senator positions, serving as liaisons between SGA and the areas they represent. Tennis player Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) was chosen as Senator for Athletics, track and field student-athlete Bryan De Souza (Everett, Mass.) was voted into the Senator position for Inclusive Excellence, and Megan Miller (Quincy, Mass.), a member of both the swimming and diving and lacrosse teams, will serve as Senator for the Richard and Sheila Young School of Nursing.

"I chose to run for the Student Government Association to become more involved with the campus community and serve as an advocate for my peers. My role as a student-athlete has inspired me to become a leader and a role model for my peers, and SGA was a platform that allowed me to do so," Miller says.

According to the NCAA, "Citizenship and responsibility are Division III attributes. Student-athletes giving back enhances the comprehensive learning component of Division III, and provides a venue for passion and service. The true essence of Division III athletics is the full integration of our student-athletes into the campus culture."

"One of the things I hope to accomplish is advocate for higher promotion and advertising of all majors on campus," Barrett continues. "Regis is an excellent nursing school, but it is also an excellent school for education, business, biomedical engineering, English, and so much more. Students in all departments are doing great things, and their hard work needs to be recognized and marketed to showcase all Regis has to offer."

Regis College is a proud Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) with 20 intercollegiate sports competing within the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
