Women’s Lacrosse Cruises to Victory in Home Opener

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College took the early lead and then put together a significant scoring run to pull away with a 16-3 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington Thursday afternoon in a non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse match at Regis Stadium.

Hope Alto (Boston, Mass.) once again led the Pride with four goals and seven draw controls, while Audrey Mason (West Springfield, Mass.) finished with two goals, four assists, three groundballs, and three draw controls. Kylee Marley (Westerly, R.I.) also notched a hat trick with three goals, and Mia Rogers (Revere, Mass.) and Molly Higgins (Weymouth, Mass.) finished with two goals apiece.

Alto struck first for the Pride off an assist from Madeline Conover (West Newbury, Mass.) just over two minutes into the match, and then Marley converted a free position attempt less than two minutes later. Later in the first quarter, Maine-Farmington took advantage of an extra-man opportunity as Abby Trefsger scored on a free position chance, but Alto picked up two more goals in the final 2:15 of the period to extend the Regis lead to 4-1.

The Pride scored all six goals in the second quarter, starting with tallies by Mason and Rogers 38 seconds apart. Rogers and Higgins would score goals 22 seconds apart later in the period, Alto earned her fourth goal of the match with less than four minutes remaining, and Higgins picked up an unassisted goal with 28 seconds left in the first half.

Mason set up Marley for a goal 1:38 into the second half to bring about the running clock situation, with Marley completing her hat trick just over two minutes later. Melinda Carbone (Bedford, Mass.) earned her first career collegiate goal midway through the third period, and Serenity Ayala (North Brookfield, Mass.) picked up her first goal of the season late in the fourth quarter.

Ruby McMinis scored for the Beavers and led her team with four draw controls, with Emilie Crocker also collecting a goal for the visitors. Kate Nowell played the entire match in net for Maine-Farmington and finished with six saves.

Daniela Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) started the match in net for the Pride and earned four saves while allowing just one goal as she earned the victory. Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.) played the second half and finished with seven saves for a .778 save percentage in the match.

Regis College (3-1) hosts UMass Boston Saturday, March 16, starting at 12 p.m. Maine-Farmington (2-2) travels to face Southern Maine next Wednesday, March 20, beginning at 4 p.m.
