Women’s Lacrosse Stays With Conference Leading Chargers

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Regis College stayed with league leading Colby-Sawyer College throughout the afternoon, but the Chargers used an early advantage to hold off the Pride, 16-9, Wednesday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse match at Sally Shaw Veitch Field.

Kylee Marley (Westerly, R.I.) led the Pride with a hat trick, while Morgan Pero (Hartford, Vt.) finished with two goals and one assist and Mia Rogers (Revere, Mass.) also scored two goals. Abbie Doheny (Lunenburg, Mass.) paced Regis with seven groundballs, and Vanessa Kozinski (Merrimack, N.H.) earned six groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Colby-Sawyer (7-0, 5-0 GNAC) jumped on the scoreboard with consecutive goals by Sophia Kuhlthau within the first 2:10 of the match. Heather Hanson scored twice as the Chargers increased their lead to 5-1 late in the first quarter before goals by Rogers and Pero in the final minute brought the Pride within two at the end of the period, 5-3.

Kuhlthau picked up her third goal of the match 37 seconds into the second quarter, but Rogers answered two minutes later to bring Regis back within two at 6-4. Colby-Sawyer would score three of the next four goals, capped by a tally from Sydney Stevens with 27 seconds remaining in the first half, to extend its lead to 9-5 at halftime.

Goals by Olivia Romo and Hannah Marquis 3:09 into the third period increased the Charger advantage to 11-5 before Marley converted on a free position attempt. Marquis would score off an assist by Hanson with 1:18 remaining in the third quarter, and then Colby-Sawyer would collect four goals in the final period, two of them by Stevens, while Marley scored twice for the Pride in the fourth quarter.

Marquis and Hanson led the Chargers with three goals and three assists apiece, with Marquis also picking up seven groundballs and three caused turnovers. Stevens ended up with three goals and two assists, Kuhlthau also notched a hat trick with three goals, and Romo and Caroline Tompkins contributed two goals and one assist each.

AJ Paton earned the victory in net for the Chargers as she was credited with five saves. Grace Heffernan (Winchester, Mass.) collected 10 saves during the match, the fourth time this season she has earned 10 or more saves for the Pride.

Regis College (1-7, 1-4 GNAC) hosts Anna Maria College Saturday, April 2, starting at 3 p.m. at Regis Stadium.
