Regis Men’s Swim Team Sweeps GNAC Weekly Awards

WINTHROP, Mass. – After leading the Regis College men's swim team to a season-opening victory over University of New England, sophomore Brendan Pike (Weymouth, Mass.) received Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men's Athlete of the Week honors, and freshman Robert Wood (Cathedral City, Calif.) was named GNAC Men's Rookie of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Before Pike and Wood posted the fastest time in three individual events apiece, they were part of the victorious 200 medley relay that won in an overall time of 1:50.08. Pike swam the second leg, posting a 50 breaststroke split of 30.87 seconds, while Wood anchored the relay with a 50 free split of 24.69 seconds.

Pike cruised to victory by almost nine full seconds in the 200 freestyle in 1:57.51. He also held on for the win in the 100 freestyle in 55.64 seconds and easily touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke with a personal-best time of 1:09.27.

Wood won the 50 breaststroke by over three seconds in 32.92 seconds and the 500 freestyle by over nine seconds with a time of 5:22.37. Wood also posted the fastest time in the 100 IM with a mark of 1:03.84.

Pike, the GNAC champion in the 500 freestyle last year, picks up his second conference weekly award after earning Rookie of the Week honors Jan. 14, 2019. Wood receives the eighth Rookie of the Week award for a Pride male swimmer out of 11 possible honors since Oct. 29, 2018.

The Regis College swimming and diving teams head to Bristol, R.I., Saturday, Oct. 19, for the Roger Williams Invitational beginning at 11 a.m. The Pride then host Bridgewater State and Eastern Connecticut State in their first home meet of the season Saturday, Oct. 26, also starting at 11 a.m.
