Pride Swimmers Receive NEISDA Weekly Awards

WESTON, Mass. – After sterling performances in the season-opening meet against the University of New England, two members of the Regis College swimming and diving teams have been named Swimmers of the Week by the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA), announced Wednesday evening by the organization.

Sarah Leonard (Brockton, Mass.), a junior who is serving as one of this year's captains, was named the NEISDA Female Swimmer of the Week. GianCarlos Banrey (Roslindale, Mass.), a freshman coming off his first intercollegiate swim meet, received the NEISDA Male Swimmer of the Week award.

Leonard won two events last Saturday to lead the Pride women to their first victory over UNE in program history. She finished first in the 50 backstroke in 28.95 seconds and in the 100 freestyle in 57.62 seconds, plus she was second in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:06.84 and she anchored the 200 freestyle relay that posted the fastest time at 1:48.09.

Banrey set the pool record in the 50 butterfly with a winning time of 24.11 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 24.20 seconds set by Giulian Santos of Bridgewater State last January. He also won the 100 butterfly in 53.74 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 51.43 seconds, plus he swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay that finished first with a time of 1:45.08.
