NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Regis College cross country team took its first look at the course to be used for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Cross Country Championships next month, traveling Friday to participate in the Norwich Cadet Invitational at the Norwich University Cross Country Course.
Aubrey Heise (Mattapoisett, Mass.) led the Regis women for the fourth consecutive meet, finishing sixth overall with a six-kilometer time of 26:18.80. Jonnie Charest (Methuen, Mass.) was next for the Pride, crossing the finish line in 17th place overall in 28:41.80.
Olivia Mmamelu (Waltham, Mass.) posted a personal season-best six-kilometer time of 30:36.80 as she finished third among Regis runners and 32nd overall, just ahead of Abby Kilbride (Peabody, Mass.) in 34th place with a time of 30:52.10. Annabelle Jean-Philippe (Randolph, Mass.) ended up in 44th place in 32:20.30, and Kim Avalo (North Attleboro, Mass.) completed her first collegiate cross country race in 40:38.90.
On the men's side, Riley Stogsdill (San Diego, Calif.) became the first runner to finish first among Regis competitors other than Benjamin Happenny (Woonsocket, R.I.) in 25 meets, posting a personal-best eight-kilometer time of 29:17.10 to end up in eighth place overall. Happenny crossed the finish line 10th overall with a time of 29:23.80.
Brian LaPorte (Bridgewater, Mass.) finished in 38th place overall with a time of 33:24.10, over a minute faster than his previous best eight-kilometer time this year. Kederson Pierre (Everett, Mass.) was close behind in 42nd place with a time of 34:53.60, followed by Ben Myette (Hanson, Mass.) with a time of 36:17.40 and Chris Margiatto (Suffield, Conn.) in 38:16.60.
The Regis women finished in fifth place in the team standings with 133 points, while the Pride men placed fourth with 113 points, just behind AIC but a few points in front of conference rivals Emmanuel and Colby-Sawyer. The Norwich men placed five competitors within the top 12 to cruise to the team title, and Johnson and Wales ended up two points ahead of Emmanuel for the women's team title.
The Regis College cross country team heads to Hopkinton, N.H., next Friday, Oct. 11, for the Bruce Kirsh Cross Country Cup hosted by Franklin Pierce University. The women's six-kilometer race is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., followed by the men's eight-kilometer race at 2 p.m.
