Ashleigh Kelley Leads Pride Cross Country with Event Victory

BOSTON – Ashleigh Kelley (Stoneham, Mass.) earned her second individual event victory of the season, leading the Regis College cross country team at the Suffolk Invitational Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park.

Kelley won the women's gold event with a six-kilometer time of 24:30, 15 seconds in front of the second-place finisher. Finishing at a 6:35 per mile pace, Kelley extended her advantage in the second half of the race, as she was two seconds in front after 3.1 kilometers.

Erin Kelley (Stoneham, Mass.) earned her third straight top-five finish, crossing the finish line in fourth place with a time of 25:32. She was able to move into fourth place during the second part of the race, as she was in fifth place at the 3.1-kilometer mark.

Lizzy Melvin (Southington, Conn.) finished in 29th place with a time of 28:27, followed by Libby Parker (Bow, N.H.) in 40th place at 29:33. Lydia Miller (Bradford, Mass.) completed her first collegiate six-kilometer race in 30:43, just ahead of Annabelle Jean-Philippe (Randolph, Mass.) in 31:00, 52 seconds faster than her time at the Elms Classic Sept. 25. Katie Kelley (Stoneham, Mass.) finished the race in 32:41.

As a team, the Regis women ended up in fourth place with 115 points, just behind conference rival Saint Joseph's College with 113 points. Simmons and Bowdoin each collected 69 points at the top of the team standings, with the Sharks posting a lower average time at 26:45 against Bowdoin's 26:55.

On the men's side, Benjamin Happenny (Woonsocket, R.I.) once again was Regis' top finisher, posting a 19th-place result with an eight-kilometer time of 30:32. Gustavo Novelle-Ruddy (Boston, Mass.) finished in 25th place with a time of 31:52, followed by Zach Sigman (Buffalo, N.Y.) in 28th place at 32:01 and Michael Carroll (Lynn, Mass.) in 32nd place at 32:40.

Brett Kiesel (Rocky Hill, Conn.) completed the eight-kilometer course in 35:35, and Ben O'Neal (New Britain, Conn.) finished the event in 43:26. The Pride men compiled 120 points to end up in fifth place in the team standings. Bowdoin placed its five scoring runners in the top 10 to cruise to the team victory, led by medalist Lucas Dicerbo with a five-second win in 28:16.

The Regis College cross country team will return to Franklin Park in two weeks for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Cross Country Championships. On Saturday, Oct. 30, the women's six-kilometer event is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by the men's eight-kilometer race at 3:15 p.m.
