Pride Cross Country Continues Strong Effort at Smith Invite

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Two top-10 performances for the Regis College women's cross country team and three top-30 placements for the men's squad highlighted the Pride's effort at the Smith College Cross Country Invitational, held Saturday morning on the campus's cross country course.

Ashleigh Kelley (Stoneham, Mass.) once again led the women's team, finishing fifth with a time of 20:02.6 over the five-kilometer course. Erin Kelley (Stoneham, Mass.) crossed the finish line in 10th place with a mark of 20:47.8 as they were the only competitors outside of medalist Bethany Donnelly of Franklin Pierce and seven runners from host Smith to end up in the top 10.

Lizzy Melvin (Southington, Conn.) finished in 33rd place with a time of 23:46.4, just ahead of teammate Libby Parker (Bow, N.H.) in 34th place in 23:52.9. Lydia Miller (Bradford, Mass.) posted a time of 26:27.5, and Annabelle Jean-Philippe (Randolph, Mass.) completed her first collegiate race in 27:08.2.

Benjamin Happenny (Woonsocket, R.I.) crossed the finish line first among the Pride men for the second straight week, posting a five-kilometer time of 18:49.1 to end up in 25th place. Zach Sigman (Buffalo, N.Y.) earned a 27th place finish in 19:03.4, followed closely by AJ Corso (Broad Brook, Conn.) in 28th place with a time of 19:23.3.

Michael Carroll (Lynn, Mass.) was next for Regis, finishing in 32nd place with a time of 19:42.9, ahead of Gustavo Novelle-Ruddy (Boston, Mass.) in 35th place in 20:12.1. Brett Kiesel (Rocky Hill, Conn.) posted a nine-second improvement from his first collegiate cross country race last week with a time of 20:30.5 to finish in 39th place.

Regis College returns to action in two weeks at the Elms College Blazer Cross Country Classic in Chicopee, Mass., Saturday, Sept. 25.
