With
sunny skies and warm temperatures, the Regis College Outdoor Track
and Field Team competed at the Tufts “Snowflake”
Classic this past weekend. With only part of the team competing due
to the Easter Holiday, the athletes that performed posted a number
of strong early-season times, setting themselves up nicely for a
fast second half.
The sprinters
led the day, starting with the 100-meter dash. Freshman Anyah
Hernandez (Brookline, MA) and junior Samantha LaFrance (Savoy, MA)
both posted seasonal bests (14.29s and 14.55s, respectively),
running well enough in the trials earlier in the meet to qualify
for the finals in the afternoon. The two would also return to
compete in the 200-meter dash. LaFrance would post another seasonal
best, while freshman Ana Baker (Hartford, CT) led the squad and set
a new personal best of 30.26s, all while into a headwind. The three
women comprise three-quarters of the team’s 4x100 meter relay
– an event they look to qualify for New Englands as the
season progresses.
The middle
distances were represented with Kate Haslam (Atkinson, NH),
officially red-shirting the season, but still competing unattached,
setting a new personal best in the 800 with a time of 2:42.09 with
Beth Frye (Adams, MA) close behind. Frye, still recovering from a
three-week bout of an upper-respiratory infection, competed in her
first 800 since February, and will look to quickly regain her
record-setting form she had for indoors.
The team will
be in full force for the next meet, at Umass Dartmouth, on April
10th.
