Women’s Tennis Defeats Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Regis College got off to a hot start by sweeping the doubles sets, making a split of the singles matches enough for the Pride to defeat Western New England University, 6-3, Saturday in a non-conference women's collegiate tennis match at the Volvo Tennis Courts.

The team of Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) and Sophi Machado (Hopedale, Mass.) did not drop a game in winning their match at number three doubles (8-0). At number one doubles, Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Stephanie Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) won their contest, 8-2, as did Nora Connor (Peabody, Mass.) and Harmony Lopez (Carlsbad, N.M.) at number two doubles.

Connor cruised to a straight-set victory at number five singles (6-1, 6-2), while Machado picked up her first career collegiate singles victory at number four singles in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) as the twosome clinched the overall match for the Pride. Lopez battled back from losing a first-set tiebreaker to win the second set and the super-tiebreaker at number two singles (6-7 (1), 6-1, 7-6 (10-3)).

Regis College (2-1) heads to Wenham, Mass., for a non-conference match against Gordon College Wednesday, Sept. 13, beginning at 3 p.m. The Pride then play their first home contest in two weeks, welcoming Emerson to campus next Saturday, Sept. 16, starting at 12 p.m.
