Regis Women’s Tennis Opens 2023 Season with Home Victory

WESTON, Mass. - Thanks to double victories for junior Harmony Lopez (Carlsbad, N.M.) and sophomore Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.), Regis College was able to defeat Bridgewater State, 5-4, Friday afternoon in a non-conference women's collegiate tennis match at the Regis Tennis Courts.

Thompson and Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) put the first point on the board for the Pride with an 8-4 victory at number one doubles. Regis was able to take a 2-1 lead into singles thanks to an 8-5 victory for Lopez and Stephanie Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) at number two doubles.

After the Bears tied the match at 2-2, Thompson extended her collegiate singles winning streak to 11 matches without a loss on a straight-set victory at number one singles (6-1, 6-1). Nora Connor (Peabody, Mass.) collected Regis' fourth point at number five singles with a straight-set win (6-2, 6-0), but Bridgewater State was able to pull within one point at 4-3.

Lopez clinched the match for the Pride with a straight-set victory at number four singles (6-0, 6-4). Gevry rallied from dropping the first set in her singles contest to win the second set, 6-2, and force a deciding third set, but Bridgewater State's Allison Carter was able to pull out the victory.

Regis College (1-0) is scheduled to travel to Rhode Island to face Roger Williams University Thursday, Sept. 7, beginning at 4 p.m. Bridgewater State (0-1) hosts Eastern Nazarene Tuesday, Sept. 5, starting at 3:30 p.m.
