Kiana Thompson Selected GNAC Women’s Tennis Player & Rookie of Year

WINTHROP, Mass. - After completing an undefeated fall season in both singles and doubles, first-year student-athlete Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) has been selected the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, highlighting Regis College's representation in the GNAC postseason honors announced Monday, Oct. 24, by the league office.

Graduate student Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) joins Thompson as a First Team All-GNAC honoree in singles, the third time in her collegiate career Mogelnicki has been recognized. Sophomore Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) is teamed with Thompson as a First Team All-GNAC selection in doubles, plus she collects her second Second Team All-GNAC in singles in as many seasons. Junior Nora Connor (Peabody, Mass.) has been selected to represent the Pride on the GNAC Women's Tennis All-Sportsmanship Team.

Thompson, a five-time GNAC Rookie of the Week also voted to the All-Rookie Team, compiled an 8-0 record at number one singles and a 9-0 mark at number one doubles, including 4-0 records in GNAC play for both singles and doubles. All eight singles victories came in straight sets, including seven 6-0 sets, as Thompson becomes the first Regis women's tennis player to receive conference Player of the Year honors since Jessie Lord was selected NECC Player of the Year in 2016 as well as the first Pride women's tennis student-athlete to earn Rookie of the Year recognition since Carly Donovan was named GNAC Rookie of the Year in 2017.

Thompson and Gevry teamed up for nine doubles victories in the number one position without a loss, including an 8-7 victory over Emma Place and Alessia Cahoon of Roger Williams after taking the tiebreaker, 7-3. The Pride duo also scored a point for Regis during Saturday's GNAC Tournament championship match with an 8-7 victory over Grace Carpenter and Emily Hill of Colby-Sawyer, prevailing in the tiebreaker, 9-7.

Mogelnicki posted an 8-2 overall record in singles and an 8-3 mark in doubles during the fall 2022 season, including 5-1 records in GNAC play for both singles and doubles. She was named GNAC Player of the Week Sept. 26 after going 4-0 against Simmons and Eastern Nazarene, clinching the Simmons match with her singles win and cruising to a straight-set singles victory against Eastern Nazarene without losing a single game. Mogelnicki moved into sixth place on the Regis all-time singles victories list with 40 career wins as well as into fourth place on the Pride career doubles victories list, also with 40 wins.

Gevry compiled a 7-1 singles record and 10-0 doubles mark during the fall campaign, including 5-0 marks in GNAC play for both singles and doubles. She earned the double bagel (6-0, 6-0) on two occasions this season, at Albertus Magnus and against Lesley, as she solidified Regis' depth with her performance at the number four singles position. During the GNAC Tournament, Gevry won the first set in both singles matches after teaming with Thompson for doubles victories.

Connor started seeing success with the Salem State match Sept. 15, winning in both singles and doubles for her first career victories. She teamed with Harmony Lopez (Carlsbad, N.M.) for a 6-2 doubles record, plus she posted a 6-4 record in singles, featuring a five-match winning streak. Playing mostly in the sixth singles position, Connor earned a straight-set victory at number five singles against University of Saint Joseph.

Thompson and Mogelnicki were also named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team after Saturday's championship match. Both players won in singles and doubles in the semifinal match against Simmons Oct. 15. Against Colby-Sawyer Saturday, Thompson earned the Pride's one point with a doubles victory and was ahead in her singles match, while Mogelnicki rallied from dropping the first set to win the second set in her singles contest and was about to begin the deciding third set when the overall match reached decision.

Regis College finished the fall portion of the 2022-23 season with an 8-3 overall record, including a 5-1 mark within the GNAC. The Pride advanced to the championship match of the GNAC Women's Tennis Tournament for the second consecutive season.
