NEW LONDON, N.H. - Regis College, the second seed in the 2022 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Tennis Tournament, battled top seed Colby-Sawyer College Saturday in the championship match, but the Chargers prevailed over the Pride, 5-1, to win the postseason conference tournament at Kelsey Courts.
Colby-Sawyer (10-3) won the first two points of the match with victories in the second and third doubles positions. Regis earned its point when Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) pulled out an 8-7 win at number one doubles after taking a competitive tiebreaker, 9-7.
Straight-set victories by Emily Hill at number three singles and Elise Hogan at number five singles extended the Charger lead to 4-1. The home team would clinch its third GNAC title within the last four league tournaments when Amelia Campanella completed her straight-set victory at number six singles.
At number one singles, Thompson won the first set and was ahead in the second set, 4-3, while Gevry split the first two sets in the number four singles position. Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) rallied back from losing the first set to win the second set, 6-3, and was about to start the third set when the overall contest reached decision.
Regis College concludes the fall portion of its schedule with an 8-3 overall record, with the spring schedule to be finalized. The GNAC is expected to announce its postseason awards next week.
