Women’s Tennis Opens Season with Road Victory

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Regis College women's tennis team avenged last year's season-opening loss to Bridgewater State as the Pride defeated the Bears, 7-2, Friday afternoon in a non-conference contest at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The number one doubles team of Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) and Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) picked up Regis' first point with an 8-1 victory to tie the match at 1-1. The veteran duo of Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Stephanie Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) earned an 8-4 victory at number two doubles to put the Pride on top heading into singles.

In her first collegiate competition, Thompson cruised to a straight-set victory at number one singles (6-1, 6-0) to extend Regis' lead to 3-1. The Pride clinched the match thanks to straight-set victories by Mogelnicki at number two singles (6-1, 6-4) and Beatrice in the number three position (6-0, 6-1).

Gevry earned a hard-fought victory at number four singles in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). In the number five singles position, Harmony Lopez (Carlsbad, N.M.) rallied from a close first-set loss to win the second set and the super-tiebreaker, 10-8, for a three-set win (4-6, 7-5, 1-0).

Regis College (1-0) will host Roger Williams University Thursday, Sept. 8, starting at 4 p.m. at the Regis Tennis Courts.
