Regis Tennis Advances to GNAC Championship Match

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Regis College avenged a regular season loss to Simmons University as the third-seeded Pride defeated the second-seeded Sharks, 5-0, Saturday at the Daly Field Tennis Courts to advance to the championship match of the 2021 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament.

Regis took the early lead by winning all three doubles contests, a reversal of the Sept. 25 meeting in which Simmons swept the three doubles sets. Stephanie Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) and Kaitlyn Colby (Merrimac, Mass.) earned the first point with an 8-3 win at number two doubles, followed by an 8-4 decision at number three doubles for Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) and Kaeleigh FitzPatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) and an 8-5 victory at number one doubles for Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Lauren Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.).

Colby quickly finished off her match at number six singles in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) to increase the Regis lead to 4-0. The fifth and deciding point was clinched by FitzPatrick at number five singles, as she picked up a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-0) to send the Pride to the tournament championship match for the first time since joining the GNAC after three previous semifinal eliminations.

When the overall match reached decision, Regis had won the first set in three contests: Katelyn Mogelnicki at number one singes, Lauren Mogelnicki at number two singles, and Gevry at number four singles. Beatrice was about to play a tiebreaker to decide the opening set of her match at number three singles when it was halted.

Regis College (7-4) will travel to New London, N.H., to face top seed Colby-Sawyer in the championship match next Saturday, Oct. 23. The Chargers defeated University of Saint Joseph, 5-0, to reach the tournament final.
