Women’s Tennis Prevails Thursday Night

ORLANDO, Fla. – For the second straight match, a non-conference women's collegiate tennis dual match involving Regis College came down to the final contest on court, and once again the Pride used that win to take the overall match, this time defeating Midway University, 4-3, Thursday night at the USTA National Campus.

With the match tied at 3-3, Lauren Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) battled Winter Bruggeworth in the number four singles position. Mogelnicki prevailed in a first-set tiebreaker, 7-3, and then was able to close out her contest as well as the entire team competition by winning the second set, 6-4.

Midway (6-8) played shorthanded, but still won the doubles point by taking both sets. Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Kaeleigh FitzPatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) forced a tiebreaker at number two doubles, but the Eagles won that tiebreaker, 7-2, to take the match, 7-6.

The Pride gained two points by default as the Eagles had only four players available for singles. Carly Donovan (Harwich, Mass.) cruised to a straight-set victory at number one singles (6-1, 6-0) to extend the Regis lead to 3-1.

The Eagles came back to tie the contest by winning the matches at number two and number three singles, with Carly Poste rallying from a first-set defeat to win the second set and the super-tiebreaker over Katelyn Mogelnicki at number three singles.

Regis College (11-5) closes out the Florida trip by playing a true road match in Babson Park, Fla., against Webber International University beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, March 6.
