Women’s Tennis Rallies for Victory Tuesday Night

ORLANDO, Fla. – Coming off a loss to Ohio Northern earlier Tuesday, Regis College rallied from an early deficit to defeat King's College, 5-4, in a non-conference women's collegiate tennis dual match at the USTA National Campus.

The contest came down to the match at number five singles, as Kaeleigh FitzPatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) and Addie Atkins split the first two sets. In the deciding super-tiebreaker, FitzPatrick fell behind, 8-4, and then had to fight off one match point before she finally prevailed, 13-11, to clinch the overall match for the Pride.

The three doubles sets were close, as King's College won the contests in the first and third positions to take a 2-0 lead. Regis prevented the doubles sweep when Kaitlyn Colby (Merrimac, Mass.) and Lauren Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) won their match at number two doubles, pulling out the tiebreaker 7-2 for an 8-7 victory.

The Monarchs extended their lead to 3-1 with a straight set victory at number one singles, but Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) pulled the Pride back to within one with a straight set win at number two singles (6-1, 6-0). King's College collected the victory at number six singles to reach the edge of clinching the match, but the Mogelnicki sisters kept Regis alive.

First, Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) earned the straight set win at number three singles (6-3, 6-0), and then Lauren Mogelnicki tied the match at 4-4 with a two-set victory at number four singles (6-3, 6-2).

Earlier Tuesday, Regis lost to Ohio Northern, 9-0. In doubles, McCormack and Carly Donovan (Harwich, Mass.) stayed close to their opponents at number one doubles before eventually losing, 8-4. At number two singles, McCormack also played the closest singles match, forcing a second set tiebreaker before her opponent pulled out the 7-5 tiebreak victory to clinch the match in straight sets.

Regis College (10-5) returns to action Thursday evening, March 5, for another contest under the lights at the USTA National Campus, as the Pride take on Midway University starting at 6:30 p.m.
