Women's Tennis Edges King's (Pa.) In Spring Opener

ORLANDO - The Regis (Mass.) women's tennis team trailed after doubles play but rallied for a 5-4 win over King's College (Pa.) to open the spring season on Tuesday at the Lake Cane Tennis Center. The Pride improve to 7-4 on the season with the Monarch's falling to 1-5.

Doubles play saw Regis open with a win when Carly Donovan (Harwich, Mass.) and Carly Scanlon (Canton, Mass.) topped the Monarch pair of Emily Kabalka (Harvey's Lake, Pa.) and Martina Gale (Bethlehem, Pa.) 8-2. King's evened the match with a win at the three before taking a 2-1 lead with a win on the No. 1 court. The Pride tandem of Katasha Jarvis (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) and Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) fell in a tiebreaker to Emily Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y.) and Natalie Coffee (West Nanticoke, Pa.).

McCormack was the first to finish in singles play, beating Kabalka 6-2, 6-0 to tie the score at 2-2 before Scanlon won 6-4, 6-2 at the four over Coffee to grab the lead. Meanwhile at first singles, Fernandez had her way with Donovan in a 6-3, 6-0 win to even the match. The Monarch's came within a match of the victory when Thea Seasock (Kingston, Pa.) won on the No. 6 court beating Sara Kanarkiewicz (Peabody, Mass.) 6-2, 6-3 for a 4-3 lead.

Despite the deficit, the win was well within reach of the Pride. Jarvis and Amy DiPace (Cambridge, Mass.), who were both up a set on the No. 2 and No. 5 courts, respectively, sealed the deal with straight set victories to give Regis the win.

Regis is in action tonight against Judson (IL) at 7:00 p.m.
