Women's Tennis Tops USJ In GNAC Opener

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Regis (Mass.) women's tennis team opened conference play on Saturday, beating the University of Saint Joseph 7-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at the USJ Tennis Courts. Regis improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC with USJ dropping to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Carly Donovan (Harwich, Mass.) and Carly Scanlon (Canton, Mass.) blanked the USJ pair of Ashley Savino (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and Catherine Baum (Bolton, Conn.) at two doubles, then both won in straight sets in first and third singles, respectively. Regis swept all its singles wins en route to the win.

Donovan and Scanlon's 8-0 doubles win was the first match to finish but the Blue Jays tied matters up with a win on the No. 3 court. Domonique Carnot (Meriden, Conn.) and Emily McAllister (Briston, Conn.) topped the Pride tandem of Amy DiPace (Cambridge, Mass.) and Gracie Jarest (Wrentham, Mass.) 8-2. Katasha Jarvis (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) and Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) regained the lead as doubles play closed with an 8-3 win on the No. 1 court.

The Pride dominated singles action with its only loss coming at the six. McCormack put Regis up 3-1, registering the first and most dominant singles win, a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Baum at the four. Scanlon then came through with her straight-set win at third singles and Donovan clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lucy Roberge (Willington, Conn.) on the No. 1 court.

The Pride continue GNAC play Wednesday, Sept. 27 with its league home opener against Suffolk at 4:30 p.m. The Blue Jays return to action Thursday, Sept. 28 hosting a 3:30 p.m. match against Western Connecticut State.
