LAKELAND, Fla. – Katasha Jarvis (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) won at first doubles, earned the match-clinching win at third singles and the Regis (Mass.) women's tennis team opened up its spring season with a gritty 6-3 win over King's College on Monday.
The Pride (11-1) weren't exactly at full strength, having to shuffle the lineup after several players fell victim to the flu bug. Jarvis and Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) got things going with an 8-4 win on the No. 1 doubles court. Erica Murphy (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Jessie Lord (Fall River, Mass.) fell at two doubles to the Monarch team of Julia Keppel (Simsbury, Conn.) and Miranda Warunek (Yatesville, Pa.) but the Pride took a 2-1 lead into singles play with Amy DiPace (Cambridge, Mass.) and Carly Scanlon's (Canton, Mass.) third doubles win.
King's (2-4) would tie up the match twice in singles play, the second when DiPace fell to Alyssa Santarelli (Jessup, Pa.) to put the score at 3-3. After McCormack's 6-4, 6-1 win on the two court put the Pride one point away from the win, Jarvis clinched it on the No. 3 court with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Emily Kabalka (Harvey's Lake, Pa.).
Murphy responded after her doubles loss and topped Keppel at first singles 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 to close the match.
Regis retakes the court on Tuesday, playing Penn State-Berks at 6:30 p.m. at the USTA Tennis Center. King's College returns to action tomorrow as well, facing Judson at 5:00 p.m. at the Fort Gatlin Recreation Complex.
