ABBIE WEHR NAMED NECC PLAYER OF THE YEAR

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College sophomore Abbie Wehr (Suwanee, Ga.) has been named the New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year in women's tennis in a vote by the conference coaches. Her doubles partner Emily Rice (Pittsfield, Mass.) has been named the NECC Rookie of the Year as well and the duo was named to both the First Team All-Conference Singles and Doubles Teams.

Wehr and Rice were an integral part of the Pride's (11-2) run to its second-straight New England Collegiate Conference Championship as Rice was named the Tournament MVP, while Wehr was named All-Tournament Singles, and both were named to the All-Tournament Doubles Team.

Wehr, the 2012 NECC Co-Player of the Year, posted a perfect 8-0 mark at No. 1 singles this season in conference play and went 12-1 overall at the top singles spot. Wehr was forced into a third set only one time this season, while her and Emily Rice went 8-0 and never allowed more than three points in doubles play in NECC play this season. Through two seasons, Wehr is 25-8 overall at No. 1 singles, and 25-1 at the top doubles spot.

Emily Rice went a perfect 8-0 at No. 2 singles in NECC play and was 11-2 overall at that spot. Rice was never forced into a third set in singles play, while she and Wehr dominated the top doubles position. Emily Rice was named the NECC Rookie of the Week five-straight times this season from September 23 through October 21. She was named the NECC Tournament MVP after posting a perfect 4-0 mark in No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles during the postseason.

Joining Wehr and Rice on the First Team All-Conference Singles selections was Jewel Medeiros (Rochester, Mass.). Medeiros went 6-0 in NECC play at No. 3 singles this season, and 8-1 overall at the position. She and Jessie Lord (Fall River, Mass.) were named to the First Team All-Conference Doubles squad after going a perfect 8-0 at No. 2 doubles and going 10-3 overall during the season.

Lord was also named to the Second Team All-Conference Singles team by going 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles in NECC play, and going 10-1 overall in 2013. Lord was never forced into a third set and won 10-straight matches to end the season starting on September 14.

Becker College won the other two major awards as head coach Brad Yaylaian was named the NECC Coach of the Year, while the Hawks won the 2013 Team Sportsmanship Award.
