REGIS POWERS PAST BECKER, 8-1

LEICESTER, Mass. – Regis College defeated Becker College, 8-1 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon. The win lifts the Pride to 5-2 (4-0 NECC), while the Hawks fall to 2-8 (1-4 NECC).

Regis opened the match with a clean sweep of doubles. In top doubles play, the tandem of Emily Rice (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Abbie Wehr (Suwanee, Ga.) bested Cameron Murphy (Weymouth, Mass.) and Anna Pilip (New Britain, Conn.), 8-2. Jewel Medeiros (Rochester, Mass.) and Jessie Lord (Fall River, Mass.) made quick work of Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield Calif.) and Shauna Buckley (Danvers, Mass.), 8-0 in number two doubles play. Erica Murphy (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Winnie Mataganyidze (Lynn, Mass.) completed the sweep of doubles with an 8-3 win over Lily Woodward-Logan (Berkeley, Calif.) and Chenylle Mercado (Tyngsborough, Mass.).

The Pride dominated five out of the six singles sets to remain perfect in league play. In top singles action, Wehr defeated Murphy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Rice captured number two singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Pilip.

Lord and Medeiros, who clinched the victory for Regis, breezed through fourth and third singles, respectively, with 6-1, 6-1 victories over Buckley and Saltvick.

The Hawks were able to avoid the shutout when Woodward-Logan clawed her way past Kat Troisi (Lynn, Mass.), 2-6, 7-5, 11-9 in number five singles. Erika Palmer (Southborough, Mass) defeated Mercado in number six singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Both teams return to the court on Thursday, Oct. 3 when Becker travels to NECC rival Bay Path at 3:30 p.m. Regis will host NECC opponent Lesley University at 5:00 p.m.
