WEHR NAMED NECC CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College freshman Abigail Wehr (Suwanee, Ga.) was named the New England Collegiate Conference's Co-Player of the Year in women's tennis this year, it was announced by the league offices on Monday morning. Wehr shares the honors with Becker College's Nicole Connolly (Scarborough, Maine). Abigail Wehr and the Regis College Pride (13-1) won the NECC Championship on Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 win over Bay Path College.

Wehr was joined on the NECC First Team All-Conference singles team by Jazz Hicks (Plymouth, Mass.) and Jewel Medeiros (Rochester, Mass.). Wehr and Hicks were also honored on the NECC First Team All-Conference Doubles Team as were Medeiros and junior Caroline Roche (Hanover, Mass.).

Wehr, a freshman, went 8-2 at the No. 1 singles position in conference play and teamed with Jazz Hicks to go a perfect 9-0 at No. 1 doubles in NECC play in 2012 and was named the NECC Tournament MVP. Connolly, who was the NECC Rookie of the Year a season ago, went 9-1 in top singles action and 8-2 in top doubles action during her sophomore campaign. Wehr and Connolly split their two head-to-head singles matches this season

Wehr and Hicks posted a 13-0 mark in No. 1 doubles for the year. The duo were named to the NECC All-Tournament doubles team, and were also honored on the All-Tournament Singles Team individually.

Jazz Hicks went a perfect 13-0 overall in No. 2 singles action and was 9-0 in NECC contests. Jewel Medeiros went 13-1 in singles play across three different singles flights and was 10-0 in NECC play. Medeiros suffered her first setback of the year in the NECC Championship, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6 at No. 4 singles.

Medeiros and Caroline Roche posted a 10-2 overall mark in No. 2 doubles this year and a 7-1 mark in NECC play and were also honored on the NECC All-Tournament Doubles Team.

Rounding out the awards was Becker's Kathleen Razzaboni (Hooksett, N.H.) being named the NECC Rookie of the Year, while the Hawks' head coach David Bostick was named the NECC Coach of the Year. Lesley University was awarded the Team Sportsmanship Award.
