REGIS TENNIS GRABS NO. 1 SEED IN NECC PLAYOFFS

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's tennis team has earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming New England Collegiate Conference postseason, it was announced by the conference offices on Tuesday. The Pride (11-1) will host No. 4 Newbury College (6-9) on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the NECC Semifinals.

Regis enters the tournament riding a four-match winning-streak, including an 8-1 win over the Nighthawks last Friday. The Pride also defeated Newbury back on September 26th by the score of 8-1.

In singles play, freshman Jazz Hicks (Plymouth, Mass.) was named the NECC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season and has been a perfect 11-0 in No. 2 singles play during 2012. Abigail Wehr (Suwanee, Ga.) has held down the No. 1 singles position, posting a 10-2 record at the top singles spot. Jewel Medeiros (Rochester, Mass.) sports the best record on the Pride as the rookie has gone 12-0 across the No.'s 3, 4, and 5 singles positions.

In doubles play, Wehr and Hicks are a perfect 11-0 at No. 1 doubles, including a 9-0 mark in NECC matches. Medeiros and Caroline Roche (Hanover, Mass.) sport a 9-1 record at No. 2 doubles, while Kendall Kolb (Plymouth, Mass.) and Erika Palmer (Southborough, Mass.) are 6-1 in the No. 3 spot. The Pride have posted a 32-4 mark in doubles play this year.

For the Nighthawks, Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, R.I.) has posted an 11-4 mark in singles play across No.'s 2, 3, and 4 singles play. Her classmate Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, N.Y.) is 9-3 in singles play including a 7-3 record at No. 4 singles. Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, N.H.) is the only other player with a winning record in singles play, going 8-6 in 2012.

MacLeod and Sarah Harris (Easton, Conn.) sport the best doubles record for the Nighthawks as the duo went 9-3 at No. 2 doubles this year. Derderian and Swafford also sport a winning record at No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 mark.

The winner of this semifinal matchup takes on the winner of No. 2 Becker and No. 3 Bay Path on Saturday afternoon at the highest remaining seed. The Hawks and Wildcats meet on Wednesday afternoon as well at 2:30 p.m.
