PRIDE REMAIN UNDEFEATED, DEFEAT NEWBURY 8-1

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's tennis team bested Newbury College, 8-1 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Wednesday afternoon. Pride first doubles tandem, first years Abigail Wehr (Suwanee, Ga.) and Jazz Hicks (Plymouth, Mass.) led Regis to their sixth victory of the season winning both their singles and doubles matches on the afternoon.

Regis came out of the gate strong with a sweep of doubles. After Wehr and Hicks earned the 8-0 first doubles victory, Pride junior Caroline Roche (Hanover, Mass.) and partner, freshman Jewel Medeiros (Rochester, Mass.) held off senior Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior Sarah Harris (Easton, Conn.) in a tight battle for second doubles with a close 8-6 win. Sophomores Kendall Kolb (Plymouth, Mass.) and Erika Palmer (Southborough, Mass.) rounded out the doubles competition with the 8-3 win in third doubles.

In the singles portion of the afternoon, Wehr took first singles in two sets, 6-0, 6-1 over Harris while Hicks also held off Nighthawk senior Jen Swafford (Merrimack, N.H.) in two sets in second singles (6-3, 6-1). Newbury senior Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, R.I.) picked up the lone victory on the day for the Nighthawks, defeating Kolb in two sets, 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.

Medeiros and Roche also went on to win their singles matches. At No. 4 singles, Medeiros defeated MacLeod by set scores of 6-1, 6-2, while Roche picked up a victory over Hannah Weiner (Barrington, R.I.) at No. 5 singles in consecutive 6-0 sets.

Vanneyra Chum (Lowell, Mass.) bested Hazel Gammand (Needham, Mass.) at No. 6 singles, recording set scores of 7-5, 6-3.

The loss drops Newbury to 2-6 on the season (1-3 NECC) in the conference while Regis remains undefeated at 6-0 overall (4-0 NECC). The Pride return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 when they host Mitchell for an 11:00 a.m. conference matchup.
