PRIDE BEST HAWKS, 8-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Regis College women's tennis team started conference play on the right note, recording a decisive 8-1 win over Becker College on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. The victory moves the Pride to 2-0 (1-0 NECC) on the season, while Becker falls to 1-4 overall (0-1 NECC).

Regis quickly jumped to a comfortable 3-0 lead after winning each doubles match. The freshmen pair of Abigail Wehr (Suwanee, Ga.) and Jazz Hicks (Plymouth, Mass.) beat Nicole Connolly (Scarborough, Maine) and Kathleen Razzaboni (Hooksett, N.H.) at No. 1 doubles, 9-7. Junior Caroline Roche (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman Jewel Medeiros (Rochester, Mass.) added to the lead when they defeated Becker's Cameron Murphy (Weymouth, Mass.) and Anna Pilip (New Britain, Conn.) by a score of 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore's Kendall Kolb(Plymouth, Mass.) and Erika Palmer (Southborough, Mass.) concluded doubles play by recording an 8-2 win over Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Shauna Buckley (Danvers, Mass.) at No. 3 doubles.

Wehr opened up singles play by capturing two consecutive 6-2 victories over Connolly at No. 1 singles. Hicks defeated Razzaboni at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Becker recorded its only win at No. 3 singles when Pilip was able to sneak past Kolb in a tiebreaker. Kolb won the first set 6-3, but Pilip went on to win the next set 7-6 and took the tiebreakser, 8-6.

Roche bested Murphy in three sets by recording wins by scores of 7-5 and 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Medeiros picked up a win over Saltvick by set scores of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Vanneyra Chum (Lowell, Mass.) rounded out singles play by recording set scores of 7-5 and 6-3 in a win over Buckley.

Regis will look to continue its winning ways when the team returns to action on Sept. 20 as the Pride host Lesley for a 5:00 p.m. matchup.
