Cashman Murphy Repeats as GNAC One Meter Dive Champion to Lead Pride

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Senior Cashman Murphy (Westwood, Mass.) won the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) title in one meter diving for the second straight year, leading the Regis College swimming and diving team on the second day of the 2023 GNAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Boston Sports Institute and Simmons University in Boston, where one meter diving took place.

Murphy compiled an 11-dive score of 420.50, 37 points in front of the second place competitor and almost 40 points more than the previous GNAC Championships record established by now-assistant coach Elisabeth McQuaid when she won the first of her two GNAC one meter diving titles in 2017. Murphy also scored five points for the Pride women by finishing 12th overall in the 50 backstroke.

Olivia Luhnau (Denver, Colo.) nearly earned her own GNAC title, finishing second for All-GNAC honors in the 100 individual medley with a collegiate-best time of 1:04.02, just 33/100ths of a second behind the race winner. Megan Miller (Quincy, Mass.) finished fourth in the same event with a collegiate-best time of 1:07.55.

Luhnau also anchored the 200 freestyle relay, teaming with Cecelia Adelfio (Gloucester, Mass.), Vera Rivard (Springfield, N.H.), and Olivia Roux (Sanford, Maine) to end up in a tie for sixth place with an overall time of 1:53.94. In the 800 freestyle relay, Adelfio, Rivard, Roux, and Miller combined for a total time of 9:24.78 to finish in fifth place.

The men collected two All-GNAC honors of their own, starting with a second place finish by Aryaman Nagaraj (Watertown, Mass.) in the 50 backstroke with a time of 27.77 seconds. Ryan Kim (Los Angeles, Calif.) picked up his second All-GNAC award in as many nights, finishing third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.43.

Samuel Madriz (Union, N.J.) finished sixth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.03 seconds. Madriz then joined Michael Curtis (Burlington, Mass.), Kim, and Nagaraj for a third place finish in the 800 freestyle relay with an overall time of 8:10.13.

In the men's one meter diving competition at Simmons, Liam Austin (Boston, Mass.) finished fifth with an 11-dive score of 253.95, followed by Curtis in sixth place with a score of 249.20. In the team standings, the Regis men maintained their third place standing with Norwich far ahead of second place University of Saint Joseph.

Roux finished fourth in the 50 backstroke in 30.04 seconds, missing the podium by just 36/100ths of a second, with Miller right behind her in fifth place in 30.19 seconds. Adelfio placed fifth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:00.57, with Rivard finishing second in the B-final and 10th overall at 6:21.07. The Pride women moved up to sixth in the team standings, with Norwich maintaining a significant lead over Simmons.

The 2023 GNAC Swimming and Diving Championships will conclude Sunday, Feb. 5, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 5:30 p.m.
